Description

Pividine Ointment (Povidone Iodine 5% Topical)

Indications:

Pividine Ointment is used for the treatment and prevention of skin infections. This includes:

  • Treatment of:
    • Primary or secondary topical infections
    • Infected surgical incisions
    • Infected decubitus (pressure) or stasis ulcers
    • Pyodermas (skin infections characterized by pus)
    • Secondarily infected dermatoses (skin conditions)
    • Infected traumatic lesions (cuts, abrasions, wounds)
  • Prevention of infection in:
    • Cuts
    • Abrasions
    • Wounds

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults:
    • For treatment of infection: Apply once or twice daily, or with each dressing change, for a maximum of 14 days.
    • For prevention of infection: Apply once or twice weekly for as long as necessary.
    • Application: Clean and dry the affected area before applying the ointment directly. The treated area may be covered with a dressing or bandage.
  • Pividine Powder: Apply as often as directed. May be covered with a dressing or bandage.

Contraindications:

  • Regular use is contraindicated in individuals with pre-existing thyroid disorders, including nodular colloid goitre, endemic goitre, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
  • Not for use in infants under 2 years of age.
  • Regular use should be avoided in patients receiving concurrent lithium therapy.

Precautions:

  • Special caution is advised when applying regularly to broken skin in patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency.
  • Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Use with caution in neonates.

Adverse Effects:

  • Common: Local skin irritation and sensitivity, occasionally mild and transient burning or sticky sensation.
  • Rare: Irritation or hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Systemic Effects (due to iodine absorption): Application to large areas of denuded skin, severe burns, or large wounds may lead to systemic adverse effects such as:
    • Metabolic acidosis
    • Hypernatraemia (elevated blood sodium)
    • Impairment of renal function
