Description

Uses:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) – chronic acid reflux
  • Peptic ulcer disease – ulcers in the stomach or duodenum
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome – a rare condition with excess stomach acid

Mechanism of Action:
Omeprazole works by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach lining. This enzyme is responsible for the final step in the secretion of gastric acid, making omeprazole very effective in reducing acid levels.

Precautions:

  • Should be used cautiously in long-term therapy
