Description

Salsa 10 Oint

Salsa 10 Ointment is a topical medication primarily used for its keratolytic properties, meaning it helps to soften and shed the outer layers of the skin. It is manufactured by Maruti Pharma Pvt. Ltd. in Nepal.

Active Ingredient: The main active ingredient in Salsa 10 Ointment is Salicylic Acid 10% w/w.

How it Works: Salicylic acid works by:

  • Keratolytic Action: It breaks down the “cement” between skin cells, allowing the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) to soften, swell, and then desquamate (shed). This is particularly useful in conditions where there’s excessive thickening or scaling of the skin.
  • Mild Antiseptic Action: It has weak antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Uses and Benefits: Salsa 10 Ointment is commonly used for various skin conditions where exfoliation and shedding of dead skin cells are beneficial:

  • Psoriasis: A chronic skin condition characterized by red, itchy, scaly patches. Salicylic acid helps to reduce scaling.
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis: A common skin condition that mainly affects your scalp, causing scaly patches, red skin, and stubborn dandruff.
  • Lichen simplex: A chronic itchy skin condition.
  • Chronic atopic dermatitis: A type of eczema.
  • Ichthyosis: A group of inherited skin disorders characterized by dry, thick, and scaly skin.
  • Warts (Verruca), Corns, and Calluses: It helps to soften and remove the hardened skin of these benign growths.
  • Acne: It helps to exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and reduce inflammation.

Directions for Use:

  • Salsa 10 Ointment is for external use only.
  • Clean the affected area before application.
  • For best results, it’s often recommended to hydrate the area for about 5 minutes (e.g., by soaking in warm water) before applying.
  • Apply a thin film of the ointment to the affected area once daily, often at night.
  • Your doctor may advise you to occlude (cover with an airtight dressing) the area at night, but do not do so unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider, as this can increase absorption and potential side effects.
  • Wash off in the morning, if directed.
  • Wash your hands before and after application.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with cool water.
  • Do not apply to open wounds, irritated, inflamed, or reddened skin.
  • Do not use on warts with hair growing from them, or on warts on the face, in or on the genital organs, or inside the nose or mouth. Also, avoid moles or birthmarks.

Side Effects: Common side effects are usually mild and may include:

  • Application site reactions (pain, burning sensation, irritation, redness, dryness, and peeling of skin).
  • Skin thinning (with prolonged use or high concentrations).
  • Allergic reactions (rare but can be severe, including hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, tightness in the throat). If you experience severe allergic reactions, seek immediate medical attention.

Precautions and Warnings:

  • Consult a doctor before use if:
    • You are allergic to salicylic acid or any other ingredients.
    • You have diabetes or poor blood circulation, as it may cause severe redness or ulceration, especially on the hands or feet.
    • You have kidney or liver disease (prolonged use over large areas could result in unwanted systemic effects).
    • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use only if prescribed by a doctor and avoid large areas or prolonged use.
    • You are using other topical medications on the same area.
    • The patient is a child younger than 2 years of age (use is generally not recommended in children under 2).
  • Do not use large amounts, apply more often, or use for a longer time than directed, as this increases the risk of systemic absorption and salicylic acid poisoning.
  • Salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight; use protective measures like sunscreen or wear protective clothing.
  • Avoid contact with hair as it may have bleaching properties.
  • If your condition worsens or does not improve after a few days/weeks as directed by your doctor, consult your doctor.
