Uses:
Rovastin (Rosuvastatin) is prescribed for:
- Reducing LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)
- Raising HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol)
- Lowering triglycerides
- Preventing heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular complications in high-risk patients
- Managing familial hypercholesterolemia (inherited high cholesterol)
How It Works:
Rosuvastatin blocks the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which the liver uses to produce cholesterol. By reducing cholesterol production, it helps lower blood cholesterol levels and slows plaque buildup in blood vessels.
Dosage:
- Typically 5–20 mg once daily, with or without food
- Taken preferably at the same time each day
- Dosage adjusted based on LDL levels, risk profile, and tolerability
Common Side Effects:
- Muscle pain, joint pain
- Headache
- Stomach upset, nausea
- Constipation
Serious (but rare) Side Effects:
- Myopathy (muscle damage) and rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown)
- Liver enzyme elevation or liver damage
- Kidney problems
- Memory issues (rare and usually reversible)
Precautions:
- Regular monitoring of liver function and CK levels (creatine kinase)
- Avoid excessive alcohol intake (increases liver risk)
- Use caution in patients with kidney or thyroid disorders
- Not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- May interact with antacids, fibrates, cyclosporine, and certain antivirals
Drug Interactions:
- Gemfibrozil, fenofibrate (increased muscle toxicity risk)
- Cyclosporine, protease inhibitors (can increase rosuvastatin levels)
- Antacids with aluminum/magnesium may reduce absorption (space dosing by at least 2 hours)
