Ovidon
Ovidon Ointment, manufactured by Nepal Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., is a topical antiseptic containing 5% Povidone Iodine. It’s used to treat and prevent skin infections.
Ovidon Ointment is effective for:
- Treating existing infections: This includes primary or secondary topical infections, infected surgical incisions, bedsores (decubitus ulcers), venous ulcers (stasis ulcers), skin infections (pyodermas), and infected skin conditions (dermatoses), as well as infected traumatic injuries.
- Preventing infections: It can be applied to cuts, abrasions, and wounds to prevent them from becoming infected.

Important Considerations
Contraindications (Do NOT Use If):
- You have thyroid disorders, especially nodular colloid goitre, endemic goiter, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
- The patient is an infant under 2 years old.
- You are undergoing lithium therapy (avoid regular use).
Precautions (Use with Caution If):
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- It’s for use in neonates.
- You have pre-existing kidney problems and are applying it regularly to broken skin.
Potential Side Effects:
Most commonly, you might experience local skin irritation and sensitivity.
If applied to large areas of broken skin, systemic effects due to iodine absorption can occur. This can lead to serious side effects like:
- Metabolic acidosis
- High sodium levels (hypernatraemia)
- Impaired kidney function
Occasionally, a mild, temporary burning or sticky sensation may occur. Rarely, more severe irritation or allergic reactions have been reported.

Povidone-iodine is a powerful antiseptic that works against a wide range of germs, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and spores. It kills these microorganisms by oxidizing their cell components and inactivating their proteins.
