Important Precautions and Warnings
- Contraindications: Do not use Nevir if you have a known hypersensitivity to nevirapine, severe liver impairment, or are breastfeeding.
- Liver and Skin Reactions: Nevirapine can cause severe, life-threatening skin rashes and liver damage. Your doctor will monitor your liver function regularly. Stop taking the medication immediately and contact your doctor if you develop a severe rash or signs of liver problems.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, discuss the potential risks with your doctor.
- Drug Interactions: Nevirapine can affect the levels of other drugs, particularly those metabolized by the CYP3A enzyme, such as methadone, which may have reduced effects.
Mechanism of Action
Nevirapine is a type of medication called a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It works by directly binding to and disrupting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which HIV-1 needs to replicate. This action prevents the virus from making copies of its genetic material.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects of Nevirapine include:
- Skin rash
- Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs)
