Description

Muroc Ointment 5 gm is a topical antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial skin infections.

Active Ingredient: The active ingredient in Muroc Ointment is Mupirocin (2% w/w).

How it Works: Mupirocin is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria on the skin. It does this by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, specifically by binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme crucial for the bacteria’s survival and replication. This action prevents the bacteria from multiplying and spreading, allowing the infection to clear.

Uses and Benefits: Muroc Ointment is primarily used for the treatment of:

  • Impetigo: A highly contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by red sores that quickly rupture, ooze, and form a honey-colored crust. It is often caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Folliculitis: Infection of hair follicles, leading to small red bumps or pustules.
  • Furunculosis (Boils): Painful, pus-filled lumps that form under the skin when hair follicles become deeply infected.
  • Secondary bacterial skin infections: Infections that occur in existing skin lesions, cuts, abrasions, or minor wounds.
  • Infected eczema or dermatitis: When eczema or dermatitis becomes secondarily infected with bacteria.
  • Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus: In some cases, it may be used to eliminate Staphylococcus aureus from the nasal passages to prevent recurring infections, though this is a specific formulation (nasal ointment) and not typically the skin ointment.

Directions for Use:

  • Muroc Ointment is for external use only. Do not swallow.
  • Clean and dry the affected area of the skin thoroughly before applying the ointment.
  • Apply a small amount of the ointment to the affected area, usually 2 to 3 times a day, or as directed by your doctor.
  • You may cover the treated area with a sterile gauze dressing (bandage) if advised by your doctor. Do not use an airtight bandage unless specifically instructed.
  • Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment, unless your hands are the area being treated.
  • Use the medication for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent resistance.
  • If your condition does not improve within 3 to 5 days, or if it worsens, consult your doctor. Do not use for more than 10 days without consulting a healthcare professional.

Side Effects: Common side effects are usually mild and may include:

  • Burning sensation at the application site
  • Stinging
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Dryness or peeling of skin
  • Rash

Less common but potentially more serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention if these occur):

  • Severe allergic reactions (hives, severe itching, rash over the whole body, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, dizziness, trouble breathing, wheezing, tightness in the chest).
  • Severe stomach pain, watery or bloody diarrhea (may be a sign of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, which can occur with antibiotic use).
  • Unusual skin blistering or peeling.
  • Signs of a new skin infection.

Precautions and Warnings:

  • Prescription Required: Muroc Ointment is a prescription medication.
  • Allergies: Do not use if you are allergic to mupirocin or any other ingredients in the ointment.
  • Kidney Disease: If you have kidney disease, especially if applying to large areas of broken skin, discuss this with your doctor as the polyethylene glycol base can be absorbed and may be problematic.
  • Open Wounds/Burns: Avoid applying to large open wounds or severely burned skin unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Eyes, Nose, Mouth: Avoid contact with eyes, nose, or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with cool water.
  • Children: The safety and efficacy in children under 2 years of age (or sometimes under 1 year, depending on the specific product leaflet) may not be fully established. Use in children should be under medical supervision.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication. If treating a cracked nipple while breastfeeding, wash the nipple thoroughly before feeding.
  • Prolonged Use: Prolonged use of any antibiotic can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.

Manufacturer in Nepal: Muroc Ointment is manufactured by Deurali-Janta Pharmaceutical Pvt. Ltd., a well-known pharmaceutical company in Nepal.
