Misoprost Tablet
Misoprost Tablet contains Misoprostol 200mcg and is manufactured by Cipla Ltd. It is available in Nepal at a retail price of NPR 26.54 per tablet. Other available brands of Misoprostol include Misoprost 100mcg (Cipla Ltd.), Misopil 200mcg (Lomus Pharmaceutical Pvt. Ltd.), Isovent 200mcg (Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd.), Mistol 200mcg (OHM Pharmaceuticals Lab Pvt. Ltd.), and Zitotec 100mcg (Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.).
Misoprost Tablet is used for:
- NSAID-induced ulcers
- Termination of pregnancy
- Benign gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Induction of labor
- Prevention of postpartum haemorrhage

Misoprostol is contraindicated in:
- Anyone with a history of allergy to prostaglandins.
- Women of childbearing potential (unless they require NSAID therapy and are using effective contraception, or for specific indications like pregnancy termination or labor induction under strict medical supervision).
- Pregnancy and lactation (except when used for specific indications like termination of pregnancy or labor induction under medical supervision).
Precautions
Use with caution in:
- For prevention and treatment of NSAID-induced gastric and duodenal ulcer: Misoprostol is contraindicated in women who are pregnant and should not be used in women of childbearing potential unless they require NSAID therapy and must use an effective contraception method while taking misoprostol.
- Conditions where hypotension might lead to severe complications (e.g., cerebrovascular or cardiovascular disease).
- Inflammatory bowel disease.
- Patients prone to dehydration.
- Elderly patients.
- Patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Lactation: The drug is rapidly metabolized in the mother to misoprostol acid, which is biologically active and is excreted in breast milk. Although no published reports of adverse effects of misoprostol in breast-feeding infants exist, caution should be exercised when misoprostol is administered to breastfeeding women.
- Pregnancy: Contraindicated except for specific indicated uses (e.g., termination of pregnancy, labor induction) under strict medical supervision.
Drug Interactions
- May increase effects of oxytocin.
- Increased risk of misoprostol-induced diarrhea with magnesium-containing antacids.
