Description

Uses:
Mirnite 30mg is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) (off-label)
  • Insomnia associated with depression
  • Sometimes used off-label for appetite stimulation, especially in elderly or cancer patients

How It Works:
Mirtazapine enhances noradrenergic and serotonergic neurotransmission in the brain by blocking specific receptors (α2-adrenergic and certain serotonin receptors like 5-HT2 and 5-HT3). This increases the levels of norepinephrine and serotonin, which helps relieve symptoms of depression and improve mood and sleep.

Dosage:

  • Typically started at 15 mg once daily at bedtime
  • May be increased to 30–45 mg based on clinical response and patient tolerance
  • Best taken at bedtime due to its sedative effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Drowsiness or sedation (very common)
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Rarely: abnormal dreams or vivid nightmares

Precautions:

  • Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you
  • Use cautiously in individuals with liver or kidney impairment, seizure disorders, or bipolar disorder
  • Monitor for worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, especially during the first few weeks of treatment
  • Do not combine with MAO inhibitors or other serotonergic drugs unless under strict medical supervision

Drug Interactions:

  • Alcohol can intensify drowsiness
  • Combining with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAO inhibitors increases the risk of serotonin syndrome
  • May enhance the sedative effects of benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, or other CNS depressants
