Meftal Syrup is a medication that helps relax muscles in your digestive system. Its active ingredient is Dicycloverine Hydrochloride.

What It’s Used For

Meftal Syrup is used to treat conditions involving muscle spasms in the digestive tract, such as:

  • Gastrointestinal tract spasm
  • Intestinal hypermotility (when your intestines move too quickly)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Dosage Instructions

Adults:

  • For Gastrointestinal Tract Spasm (Oral): Take 10-20 mg three times a day.
  • For Gastrointestinal Tract Spasm (Intramuscular injection): In some cases, a doctor might give 20 mg by injection four times a day for only 1-2 days. You’ll switch to oral medication as soon as possible.

Children (Oral for Gastrointestinal Tract Spasm):

  • 2-12 years old: Take 10 mg three times a day.
  • 6 months – 2 years old: Take 5-10 mg three to four times a day.

How to Take It

You can take Meftal Syrup with or without food, meaning before or after your meals.

Who Should Not Take It (Contraindications)

Do not use Meftal Syrup if you have:

  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Intestinal atony (loss of muscle tone in the intestines)
  • Myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disorder)
  • Glaucoma (an eye condition)
  • Reflux oesophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus due to acid reflux)
  • Infants under 6 months old
  • If you are breastfeeding

Important Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before taking Meftal Syrup:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
  • Paralytic ileus (a type of intestinal obstruction)
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Fast or irregular heartbeats (cardiac tachyarrhythmia)
  • Special caution is advised for children and the elderly.
  • Pregnancy: If you are pregnant, consult your doctor.

Drug Interactions

Meftal Syrup can interact with other medications:

  • It may reduce the effects of drugs that affect how your gut moves, like metoclopramide.
  • Taking it with antacids can affect how well Meftal Syrup is absorbed.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of Dicycloverine Hydrochloride may include:

  • Difficulty focusing your vision
  • Worsening of glaucoma
  • Fast heartbeat, palpitations, or irregular heart rhythms
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention)
  • Restlessness, confusion, excitement, hallucinations, or delirium.

Potentially Serious Side Effect:

  • In infants under 10 weeks old, there’s a risk of respiratory arrest, which can be fatal.

Dicycloverine Hydrochloride helps relieve spasms in the smooth muscles of your digestive and urinary tracts. It does this partly by blocking certain signals (antimuscarinic action) and partly by acting directly on the muscles themselves.
