What is Lans OD Capsule?

Lans OD Capsule contains Lansoprazole 30mg, a type of medication known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in your stomach. Manufactured by Zydus Pharmaceuticals, Lans OD is available in Nepal, typically sold with a retail price of NPR 9.07 per capsule.


How to Take Lans OD Capsule

Always take Lans OD Capsule on an empty stomach, before meals.

Adult Dosing

  • Peptic Ulcer:
    • Duodenal Ulcer: 30 mg once daily in the morning for up to 4 weeks.
    • Gastric Ulcer: 30 mg once daily in the morning for up to 8 weeks.
    • Maintenance: 15 mg per day.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:
    • Initially: 60 mg once daily in the morning. Doses exceeding 120 mg daily should be given in two divided doses.
  • Acid-Related Dyspepsia: 15-30 mg once daily in the morning for 2-4 weeks.
  • Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
    • Initial: 15-30 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 weeks.
    • Maintenance: 15-30 mg once daily, adjusting based on response.
  • Prophylaxis of NSAID-Induced Ulcers: 15-30 mg once daily in the morning.
  • H. pylori Infection: As part of a 1-week triple therapy: 30 mg twice daily combined with clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily and amoxicillin 1 g twice daily, OR combined with clarithromycin 250 mg twice daily and metronidazole 400 mg twice daily.
  • Erosive Oesophagitis: 30 mg once daily in the morning for up to 8 weeks. An additional 8 weeks may be given if not healed. Maintenance: 15 mg once daily.
  • NSAID-Associated Ulceration: 30 mg once daily in the morning for 4-8 weeks.
  • Elderly: No dosage adjustment is typically needed.
  • Severe Hepatic Impairment (Liver Issues): Maximum dose of 30 mg per day.

Child Dosing

  • Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease & Erosive Oesophagitis:
    • 1-11 years:
      • < 30 kg: 15 mg once daily in the morning for up to 12 weeks.
      • > 30 kg: 30 mg once daily in the morning for up to 12 weeks. Doses may be increased up to 30 mg twice daily if the patient is still symptomatic after 2 or more weeks of treatment.
    • 12-17 years:
      • GERD: 15 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.
      • Erosive Oesophagitis: 30 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.

Renal Impairment (Kidney Issues)

No dosage adjustment is typically needed.


Important Considerations

Contraindications

Do not take Lans OD Capsule if you have a known hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to lansoprazole or any of its components.

Precautions

  • Use with caution if you have hepatic impairment (liver problems).
  • Your doctor should rule out gastric malignancy (stomach cancer) before starting treatment.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s not known if lansoprazole is distributed into breast milk, so nursing is generally not advised.

Potential Drug Interactions

Lans OD Capsule can interact with other medications. It’s crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, especially:

  • Diuretics and Digoxin: May increase the risk of low magnesium levels.
  • Erlotinib, Dasatinib, Lapatinib: May decrease the plasma concentration of these drugs, reducing their effectiveness.
  • Itraconazole, Ketoconazole: May decrease the bioavailability (absorption) of these antifungal medications.
  • Cilostazol, Methotrexate: May increase the plasma concentration of these drugs.
  • Antacids and Sucralfate: May reduce the absorption of Lans OD Capsule.
  • Rilpivirine and Atazanavir: May significantly decrease serum levels and pharmacological effects of these HIV medications, which could be potentially fatal.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects (occurring in 1-10% of users) include:

  • Headache (3-7%)
  • Diarrhea (1-5%)
  • Constipation (1-5%)
  • Nausea (1-3%)
  • Abdominal pain (1-3%)

Less common side effects (occurring in less than 1% of users) can include anxiety, angina, palpitations, syncope, edema, anorexia, dry mouth, tenesmus, flatulence, melena, myalgia, tinnitus, and allergic reactions.
