What it’s for & How to Take It

 

  • Uses: It treats various bacterial infections like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, ear infections, typhoid fever, and gonorrhea.
  • Adults: Usually 200-400 mg daily. For gonorrhea, it’s a single 400 mg dose. Typhoid fever is typically 20 mg/kg daily for 7-14 days.
  • Children: Dosing is based on weight, usually 8 mg/kg/day. Not for kids under 6 months.
  • Kidney Issues: Dosing needs adjustment; max 200 mg daily if kidney function is very low.
  • How to take: You can take it with or without food. Taking it with food or milk might help if it upsets your stomach.

 

Important Things to Know

 

  • Don’t use if: You’re allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Be careful if: You’re allergic to penicillin, pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney problems, or GI issues.
  • Interactions: Can interact with probenecid and blood thinners (anticoagulants), potentially increasing bleeding risk.
  • Side Effects: Diarrhea is common (16%). Other less common effects include stomach pain, dizziness, nausea, rash, and fever. A serious side effect can be pseudomembranous colitis.
  • How it works: It kills bacteria by preventing them from building their cell walls.

Kefix Tablet contains Cefixime 200mg and is manufactured by Nepal Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. It’s available in Nepal, with a retail price of ₨ 25.00 NPR per tablet. Other forms of Cefixime, such as Dry Syrup, are also available under different brands.

 

Uses (Indications)

 

Kefix Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, Pharyngitis, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Tonsillitis, Acute Bronchitis, and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis.
  • Other Infections: Typhoid fever, Soft tissue infections, and Gonococcal urethritis.

 

Dosage Information

 

  • Adults:
    • For most infections (e.g., bronchitis, ear infections, sore throat, UTIs): 200 mg or 400 mg daily, as a single dose or divided into two doses.
    • For Gonorrhea: A single 400 mg dose.
    • For Typhoid fever: 20 mg/kg body weight daily, divided into two doses. Treatment usually lasts 7 days but can extend up to 14 days based on severity.
  • Children (Oral):
    • Generally: 8 mg/kg/day for children weighing less than 50 kg, given every 12-24 hours.
    • For severe infections (convalescent therapy): Up to 20 mg/kg/day.
    • For Suspension forms (if applicable):
      • Children over 6 months: 8 mg/kg daily in 1-2 divided doses.
      • 6 months-1 year: 75 mg daily.
      • 1-4 years: 100 mg daily.
      • 5-10 years: 200 mg daily.
    • For Typhoid Fever (children): 15-20 mg/kg/day orally, divided every 12 hours for 7-14 days (do not exceed 400 mg/day).
    • Not recommended for children under 6 months as safety and efficacy are not established.
  • Renal Impairment: Dose reduction is necessary. If creatinine clearance (CrCl) is less than 20 ml/min, the maximum daily dose is 200 mg.

 

Administration

 

Kefix Tablet can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food or milk may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

 

Important Warnings & Precautions

 

  • Contraindications: Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.
  • Precautions: Use with caution if you have a history of penicillin allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding (excretion in milk is unknown), have renal failure, or gastrointestinal disease.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Probenecid can increase Cefixime concentrations.
    • Anticoagulants can potentially lead to increased prothrombin time, which may be fatal.
  • Side Effects:
    • Common (>10%): Diarrhea (16%).
    • Less Common (Frequency Not Defined): Abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, rash, headache, fever, and various blood test abnormalities.
    • Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis.

 

How it Works (Mechanism of Action)

 

Cefixime works by interfering with the building of bacterial cell walls. It binds to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins or PBPs), which stops the bacteria from synthesizing their protective cell wall, leading to bacterial cell death.
