Composition

Mechanism of Action
Metformin acts by:
- Reducing hepatic glucose production
- Decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose
- Improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization
It does not cause insulin secretion and, therefore, has a lower risk of hypoglycemia when used alone.
Indications
GLYCOMET 1gm is indicated for:
- Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight adults
- Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with sulfonylureas, insulin, or other antidiabetic medications
Dosage and Administration
- Usual Dose: As directed by the physician; typically 500 mg to 1000 mg once or twice daily with meals
- Administration: Should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort
- Maximum Dose: Should not exceed 2000–2550 mg per day depending on the formulation and patient tolerance
Storage
- Store below 30°C
- Keep in a dry place, away from light and moisture
- Keep out of reach of children
Precautions
- Not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment or liver dysfunction
- Risk of lactic acidosis; monitor kidney function periodically
- Should be temporarily discontinued before any radiologic procedure involving iodinated contrast
- Use with caution in elderly patients
