Precautions
- Avoid long-term continuous therapy, especially on the face, in skin folds (flexures and intertriginous areas), and in infants and children.
- Exercise caution when applying near the eyes, as glaucoma may result if the preparation enters the eye.
Interactions
- Synergistic action: May enhance the effect of antistaphylococcal penicillin.
- Antagonism: May reduce the effect of ciprofloxacin.
Adverse Effects
As with other topical steroids (note: this section seems to refer to a combination product or a general caution, as Fusidic Acid itself is an antibiotic, not a steroid. Assuming this refers to a potential combination or a general warning about long-term topical use effects that might be confused with steroid side effects if not clarified, or if the product also contains a steroid which is not explicitly mentioned for Fubiotic Cream here, but implied by the “Topical hydrocortisone is contraindicated” section).
Potential local adverse effects with prolonged and intensive treatment may include:
- Atrophic skin changes (e.g., striae, thinning of the skin, dilation of superficial blood vessels), particularly with occlusive dressings or in skin folds.
- Systemic absorption leading to adrenal suppression can occur with prolonged or extensive use, especially when occlusive dressings (like napkins in infants) are used. Infants and children are particularly susceptible.
Mechanism of Action
Fusidic acid works by disrupting the translocation of peptide subunits and elongating the peptide chain in susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
