Description

Encorate Chrono 500mg Tablet is a controlled-release (Chrono/CR) tablet that contains a combination of Sodium Valproate 333mg and Valproic Acid 145mg, totaling 500mg of valproate derivatives. It is an antiepileptic drug (AED) or anticonvulsant.

Uses: Encorate Chrono 500mg is primarily used to:

  • Treat and prevent various types of epileptic seizures (fits), including:
    • Generalized seizures (affecting the entire brain from the start, like tonic-clonic seizures)
    • Partial seizures (starting in one part of the brain)
    • Myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks)
    • Absence seizures (brief periods of lost awareness)
  • Manage manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder (a mood disorder characterized by extreme highs and lows).
  • Prevent migraine headaches.

The combination of Sodium Valproate and Valproic Acid works by increasing the levels of Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a natural calming neurotransmitter in the brain. This helps to decrease abnormal and excessive nerve activity, thereby controlling seizures and stabilizing mood. The “Chrono” or “CR” (controlled release) formulation ensures a gradual and consistent release of the medication, allowing for less frequent dosing and more stable blood levels.

Dosage and Administration:

  • The dosage is highly individualized and determined by a doctor based on the patient’s condition, age, and response.
  • It is typically taken with food to minimize stomach upset.
  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not chew, crush, or break it, as this will disrupt its controlled-release mechanism and could lead to rapid absorption and increased side effects.
  • Take it regularly at the same time each day for consistent therapeutic levels.
  • Do not stop taking this medication suddenly without consulting your doctor, as abrupt discontinuation can lead to a worsening of seizures or other severe withdrawal symptoms.

Side Effects: Common side effects can include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea
  • Tremors (shaking)
  • Drowsiness, sleepiness, dizziness, fatigue
  • Headache
  • Weight gain (due to increased appetite)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Memory impairment, confusion

More serious, but less common, side effects include:

  • Liver damage: This is a serious risk, especially in young children and those with pre-existing liver conditions. Regular liver function tests are essential. Report symptoms like unusual fatigue, weakness, yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or abdominal pain immediately.
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas, causing severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., low platelets, leading to increased bleeding/bruising, or low white blood cells, increasing infection risk).
  • Mood or behavior changes, including depression and suicidal thoughts (monitor and report immediately).

Precautions and Warnings:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use with extreme caution. Valproate is associated with a significant risk of birth defects (e.g., neural tube defects) and developmental problems in children exposed during pregnancy. It is generally contraindicated in pregnancy unless there is no suitable alternative and the benefits clearly outweigh the risks, requiring careful discussion with a specialist. Effective non-hormonal contraception is crucial for women of child-bearing potential. It passes into breast milk.
  • Liver and Kidney Problems: Use with caution, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Regular monitoring of liver function is essential.
  • Urea cycle disorders or mitochondrial disorders: Contraindicated in these conditions.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol as it can increase drowsiness and other side effects.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: This medication can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination; exercise caution.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, as valproate can interact with many drugs, including hormonal contraceptives and other AEDs.
