Description
Drotaverine Hydrochloride works directly on smooth muscle cells. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibiting phosphodiesterase-IV (PDE4), an enzyme found in smooth muscle. By blocking PDE4, Drotaverine increases the intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP). This elevated cAMP concentration leads to the relaxation of smooth muscles, thereby alleviating the painful spasms and helping to restore normal function. This direct action provides rapid relief without the significant anticholinergic side effects often associated with other antispasmodics.
