Drotaverine Hydrochloride exerts its antispasmodic effect by directly acting on smooth muscle cells. Its primary mechanism involves the inhibition of phosphodiesterase-IV (PDE4), an enzyme present in smooth muscle. By inhibiting PDE4, Drotaverine increases the intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP). This elevated cAMP concentration leads to the relaxation of smooth muscles, thereby relieving the painful spasms and restoring normal function. This direct action provides rapid relief without the significant anticholinergic side effects often associated with other antispasmodics.
