Cefiro 200mg Tablet, manufactured by Chemi Drug Industries Pvt. Ltd., is a medication available in Nepal containing Cefixime as its active ingredient.

Cefiro Tablet is prescribed for various susceptible bacterial infections, including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Pharyngitis
  • Typhoid fever
  • Sinusitis
  • Otitis media
  • Tonsillitis
  • Soft tissue infections
  • Respiratory tract infections (such as Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis and Acute Bronchitis)
  • Gonococcal urethritis

Description

Cefiro can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food or milk may help minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.


 

Important Considerations

 

Contraindications:

  • Do not use this medication if you have a hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergy to penicillins.
  • Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation, and in patients with renal failure or gastrointestinal disease.
  • It is currently unknown whether Cefixime is excreted in breast milk.

Interactions:

  • Probenecid can increase the concentration of Cefixime in the body.
  • Cefixime may increase prothrombin time when taken with anticoagulants, which could be life-threatening.

Adverse Effects (Side Effects):

  • Very Common (>10%): Diarrhea (16%)
  • Frequency Not Defined (Can occur but less common): Abdominal pain, Candidiasis, Dizziness, Dyspepsia, Elevated transaminases, Eosinophilia, Erythema multiforme, Fever, Flatulence, Headache, Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Increased creatinine, Leukopenia, Nausea, Prolonged prothrombin time (PT), Pruritus, Pseudomembranous colitis, Rash, Serum sickness-like reaction, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Thrombocytopenia, Urticaria, Vaginitis, Vomiting.
  • Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis.

 

How it Works (Mechanism of Action)

 

Cefixime works by binding to specific proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside bacteria. This action prevents the bacteria from properly synthesizing their cell walls, a critical step for their survival. By inhibiting this process, Cefixime effectively kills the bacterial cells.
