Briptin 1.25 Tablet is a medication used to treat several conditions, primarily those related to hormone imbalances and Parkinson’s disease. It is indicated for:

• Parkinson’s disease
• Galactorrhea (abnormal breast milk production)
• Hypogonadism (underactive reproductive glands)
• Infertility (in some cases)
• Acromegaly (excess growth hormone)
• Lactation suppression (stopping breast milk production)
• Benign breast and menstrual disorders
• Amenorrhea (absence of menstruation)
• Hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels)

How to Use

Briptin 1.25 Tablet should be taken with food.

Adult Dosing:

• Parkinson’s Disease (as an add-on to levodopa):
  • 1st week: 1-1.25 mg at night.
  • 2nd week: 2-2.5 mg at night.
  • 3rd week: 2.5 mg twice daily.
  • 4th week: 2.5 mg three times daily.
  • Then, increase as needed by your doctor.
  • Maintenance dose: 10-40 mg per day.
• Hyperprolactinemia:
  • Initial: 1.25-2.5 mg by mouth once daily.
  • Your doctor may increase the dose by 2.5 mg per day every 2-7 days.
  • Usual therapeutic dose: 5-7.5 mg per day, with a range of 2.5-15 mg per day.
  • Some patients with amenorrhea and/or galactorrhea may use up to 30 mg per day.
• Acromegaly (Parlodel brand):
  • Initial: 1.25-2.5 mg by mouth at bedtime for 3 days.
  • Your doctor may increase the dose by 1.25-2.5 mg per day every 3-7 days.
  • Do not exceed 100 mg per day.
• Adjunct to Surgery and Radiotherapy in Acromegaly:
  • Initial: 2.5 mg twice daily.
  • Increase slowly as needed, up to 5 mg every 6 hours.
• Lactation Suppression (to stop milk production):
  • 2.5 mg per day for 2-3 days, up to 2.5 mg twice daily for 14 days.
• Prevention of Puerperal Lactation (after childbirth):
  • 2.5 mg on the day of delivery, then 2.5 mg twice daily for 14 days.
• Cyclical Benign Breast and Menstrual Disorders:
  • 2.5 mg twice daily.

Liver Impairment:

• Dose adjustments may be needed; there are no specific guidelines, so your doctor will determine the appropriate dose.

Child Dosing:

• Hyperprolactinemia:
  • 11-15 years: 1.25-2.5 mg by mouth once daily (initially).
  • Maintenance: 2.5-10 mg per day.

Important Considerations

Do Not Use If:

• You have breast carcinoma.
• You are hypersensitive or allergic to ergot alkaloids (a class of drugs that includes bromocriptine).
• You have uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension).
• You have severe ischemic heart disease (heart disease due to narrowed arteries).
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions:

• Increased Conception Risk: This medication can increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
• Stomach Issues: Use with caution if you have a peptic ulcer or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Diabetes: Use with caution if you have diabetes or diabetic retinopathy (eye damage from diabetes).
• Organ Impairment: Use with caution if you have impaired liver or kidney function.
• Lung/Heart Issues: Report any new or worsening pleuropulmonary (lung and chest lining) signs and symptoms to your doctor immediately.
• Mental Health: Use with caution if you have a history of psychosis or dementia.
• Cardiovascular Disease: Use with caution if you have cardiovascular disease or are on concurrent antihypertensive therapy (medication for high blood pressure).
• Driving & Operating Machinery: This drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness, which can impair your ability to drive vehicles or operate machinery. Exercise caution.
• Breastfeeding: Briptin 1.25 should not be used during lactation.

Interactions:

• Erythromycin: Taking Briptin 1.25 with erythromycin (an antibiotic) can increase the amount of bromocriptine in your body.
• Alcohol: Alcohol reduces your tolerance to bromocriptine, and vice-versa. Avoid alcohol while on this medication.
• Antihypertensives: The blood pressure-lowering effects of other antihypertensive medications may be increased when taken with Briptin 1.25.
• Psychotropics: Avoid concurrent use with psychotropic medications (drugs affecting mood, perception, or behavior).

How It Works

Bromocriptine is a dopamine D2 and D3-agonist. This means it works by activating specific dopamine receptors in your brain (in the tuberoinfundibular and nigrostriatal pathways). By doing this, it helps to:

• Inhibit the secretion of prolactin from the front part of the pituitary gland, which is why it’s used for high prolactin levels and related disorders.
• Address symptoms in Parkinson’s disease by mimicking the effects of dopamine, which is deficient in this condition.
