What is Amx 500 Capsule Used For?
Amx 500 Capsule is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Pharyngitis (sore throat)
- Acute otitis media (ear infection)
- Acute bacterial sinusitis
- Endocarditis (heart infection)
- Anthrax
- Chlamydial cervicitis
- Chlamydial urethritis
- Lyme disease
- Dental abscesses
- Salmonellosis
- Typhoid fever
- Acute uncomplicated gonorrhea
- Infections of the Lower Respiratory Tract
- Skin and Skin Structure infections
- Genitourinary Tract infections
- Infections of the Ear, Nose, and Throat
How to Use Amx 500 Capsule
Amx 500 Capsule can be taken with or without food. Taking it with meals may improve absorption and help reduce stomach discomfort.
Adult Dosage
- Susceptible infections: 250-500 mg every 8 hours.
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea with probenecid: 3 g as a single dose.
- Dental abscesses: 3 g, repeated once 8 hours later.
- Uncomplicated acute UTI: 3 g, repeated once 10-12 hours later.
- Prophylaxis of endocarditis (prevention): 2 or 3 g as a single dose, 1 hour before a dental procedure.
- Severe or recurrent respiratory tract infections: 3 g twice daily.
- H. pylori infection: 500 mg three times daily, typically combined with either metronidazole or clarithromycin, and a bismuth compound or an antisecretory drug.
- IV/IM Susceptible infections: 500 mg every 8 hours. (Note: This refers to Amoxicillin in general; Amx 500 Capsule is for oral use).
- Listerial meningitis with other antibiotics: 2 g every 4 hours for 10-14 days. (Note: This refers to Amoxicillin in general; Amx 500 Capsule is for oral use).
Child Dosage
- Standard dose: 40–45 mg/kg/day, divided and given every 8-12 hours.
- High dose: 80–90 mg/kg/day, with a maximum of 4 g/day, divided and given every 12 hours.
- For penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae otitis media: 150 mg/kg/day, divided and given every 8 hours.
Renal Dosage
For patients with kidney impairment:
- Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) 10-30 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 12 hours.
- CrCl <10 mL/min: 250-500 mg every 24 hours.
- Patients on hemodialysis: Should receive 250-500 mg every 24 hours, plus an additional dose during and after each dialysis session.
Important Considerations and Warnings
Do Not Use Amx 500 Capsule If You Have:
- A known hypersensitivity (allergy) to amoxicillin or other penicillins.
Precautions:
- Kidney (renal) and liver (hepatic) disease: Use with caution.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Amoxicillin is excreted in breast milk. Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation.
- Infectious mononucleosis: A skin rash is common with amoxicillin in patients with this condition.
- Monitoring: Plasma concentrations of gentamicin should be monitored in patients receiving high doses or prolonged courses, in infants, the elderly, patients with renal impairment, cystic fibrosis, or significant obesity. Auditory and renal functions should also be monitored.
Interactions:
- Oral Contraceptives: May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
- Anticoagulants: May increase the effect of anticoagulants (blood thinners).
- Allopurinol: Increased risk of allergic reactions when used with allopurinol.
- Probenecid: Increases and prolongs blood levels of amoxicillin.
- Other antibiotics: Chloramphenicol, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines may interfere with the bactericidal effect of amoxicillin.
- Potentially Fatal Interactions:
- Neuromuscular hypersensitivity.
- Pseudomembranous colitis.
Possible Side Effects:
- Hyperactivity, agitation, insomnia, dizziness
- Skin rashes: maculopapular rash, exfoliative dermatitis, urticaria (hives), hypersensitivity vasculitis
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
- Blood disorders: anemia, thrombocytopenia (low platelets), leukopenia (low white blood cells), agranulocytosis (severe low white blood cells)
How Amx 500 Capsule Works (Mechanism of Action)
Amoxicillin is an aminopenicillin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the final step of peptidoglycan synthesis, a crucial component of the bacterial cell wall. It does this by binding to specific proteins called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which ultimately leads to the breakdown of the bacterial cell wall and bacterial death
