Main Uses:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Community-acquired pneumonia
- Certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhea
Mechanism of Action:
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, blocking protein synthesis, which results in bacteriostatic activity (halting bacterial growth).
Dosage & Administration:
- Administered via intravenous infusion only, not for direct IV injection
- Dosage and duration depend on infection severity and physician guidance
- Typically followed by oral azithromycin to complete therapy
Side Effects:
- Pain or swelling at the injection site
- Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps
- Headache or dizziness
- Rare: Liver enzyme changes, allergic reaction, QT prolongation (heart rhythm changes)
