Indications:
A-Phenicol Eye Drops are used to treat bacterial eye infections, including:
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- Keratitis (corneal infections)
- Blepharitis (eyelid infections)
- Infections caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, E. coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella, Moraxella, and Neisseria species
Mechanism of Action:
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It stops bacteria from growing by blocking protein synthesis at the ribosomal level (50S subunit), making it effective against many types of bacteria.
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults and children: Instill 1–2 drops into the affected eye(s) every hour for the first 2–3 days
- Then reduce to 4 times a day
- Treatment should continue for around 7 days, but not more than 3 weeks unless advised by a doctor
Contraindications:
Do not use if you are allergic to chloramphenicol or any ingredient in the drops
Precautions:
- Not meant for minor infections or preventive use
- Long-term use may cause rare blood problems like anemia or low white blood cell count
- Use cautiously in patients with a history of blood disorders
Side Effects:
- Mild burning or stinging after application
- Redness or irritation
- Allergic reactions such as rash or swelling
- Rare but serious: blood disorders with prolonged use
Use During Pregnancy & Lactation:
Only use if absolutely necessary and prescribed by a doctor, as safety is not well established in pregnancy or breastfeeding
Storage:
- Store at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerated)
- Protect from light
- Keep out of reach of children
- Discard 30 days after opening
