Uses:
Zosert 25 is used to treat various mental health conditions including:
- Major depressive disorder (MDD)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
Mechanism of Action:
Sertraline works by increasing levels of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. It does this by blocking the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin into neurons, making more of it available in the brain.
Dosage & Administration:
- Generally taken once daily, with or without food
- Often started at 25 mg and may be increased gradually based on the patient’s response
- Should be taken at the same time each day
- Do not stop abruptly; tapering is required under medical supervision
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia or drowsiness)
- Dry mouth
- Increased sweating
- Sexual side effects (e.g., reduced libido)
Serious Side Effects (Less Common):
- Suicidal thoughts (especially in young adults during early treatment)
- Serotonin syndrome (if combined with other serotonergic drugs)
- Low sodium levels (hyponatremia)
- Seizures (rare)
Precautions:
- Not recommended for use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of discontinuing them
- Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment
