Uses
TRAX 500 is commonly prescribed for:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
- Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
- Nosebleeds (epistaxis)
- Post-operative bleeding
- Bleeding during dental procedures
- Hereditary angioedema (a condition causing recurrent swelling)
Dosage
The typical oral dosage for adults is 1–1.5 grams (1000–1500 mg) per day, divided into 2–3 doses. For children, the dosage is generally 25 mg/kg body weight, divided into 2–3 doses. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for individuals with renal impairment.
Precautions
TRAX 500 should be used with caution or avoided in individuals with:
- Severe renal impairment
- Active intravascular clotting or thromboembolic disease
- Subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Color vision disturbances
- History of thromboembolic events
- Irregular menstrual bleeding
- Hematuria (blood in urine)
Regular monitoring of liver function and eye examinations are recommended during long-term use. Discontinue use if visual disturbances occur. Avoid intravenous administration rates exceeding 1 mL/minute to reduce the risk of hypotension.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Nasal and sinus symptoms
- Back pain
- Abdominal pain
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Fatigue
- Anemia
- Muscle cramps and spasms
- Migraine
Less common but serious side effects may include visual abnormalities, hypotension (with rapid injection), nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
TRAX 500 may interact with:
- Estrogens
- Factor IX complex concentrates
- Anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates
- Tretinoin (in acute promyelocytic leukemia)
These interactions may increase the risk of thrombus formation. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.
