Usage
Sonate 500 is primarily used for:
- Dyspepsia: Relieving symptoms of indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach.
- Metabolic Acidosis: Correcting acid-base imbalances in conditions like severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock, anoxia, severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, and severe primary lactic acidosis.
- Urine Alkalinization: Preventing the development of uric-acid kidney stones in the initial stages of treatment for hyperuricemia in chronic gout.
Dosage
- Form: Tablet
- Strength: 500 mg
- Administration: Take on an empty stomach (at least one hour before food or two hours after food).
- Adult Dosage:
- Urine Alkalinization: Up to 10 g daily in divided doses, to be taken with a liberal amount of fluid.
- Chronic Metabolic Acidosis: Doses providing 57 mmol (4.8 g sodium bicarbonate) or more daily, as required.
- Dyspepsia: 1-5 g in water, may be taken as required.
- Elderly and Renal/Hepatic Impairment: Dosage adjustments may be required.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, heartburn, indigestion.
- Electrolyte imbalances: Hypernatremia, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia.
- Other: Edema, tetany.
Serious side effects (though rare) may include gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding.
Precautions
- Allergy: Avoid if allergic to sodium bicarbonate or other ingredients in the tablet.
- Conditions: Use with caution in individuals with epilepsy, congestive heart failure (CHF), renal impairment, liver cirrhosis, hypertension, edema, eclampsia, or aldosteronism.
