Rabi Tablet (Rabeprazole 20mg)

 

Rabi Tablet contains Rabeprazole 20mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that effectively reduces stomach acid production. It’s manufactured by QMED Pharma and is available in Nepal.


 

What It’s Used For

 

Rabi Tablet is prescribed for conditions caused by excessive stomach acid, including:

  • Peptic Ulcer Disease: This covers both duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers.
  • H. pylori Infection: Often part of a combination therapy to eliminate this common stomach bacterium.
  • Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): A chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and potential damage (erosive oesophagitis).
  • Paediatric GERD: Used for children over 12 years old.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A rare condition characterized by severe acid overproduction.

Description

Do Not Take If:

  • You have a known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to Rabeprazole, other proton pump inhibitors, or any ingredients in Rabi Tablet.

Precautions:

  • Gastric Malignancy: Your doctor should rule out stomach cancer before you start this medication, as symptoms can be masked.
  • Severe Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution if you have severe liver problems.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s unknown if Rabeprazole passes into breast milk.
  • Magnesium Levels: Your doctor may monitor your magnesium levels, especially during prolonged use, as PPIs can sometimes lead to low magnesium (hypomagnesemia).

Potential Side Effects:

Common side effects (affecting 1-10% of users) can include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • General pain
  • Pharyngitis

Less common (less than 1%) but more serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions, liver issues, kidney problems, bone fractures (with long-term use), and severe skin reactions.

Drug Interactions:

Rabeprazole can interact with other medications. Always inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially:

  • Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Clopidogrel: Rabeprazole may reduce their effectiveness.
  • Diuretics and Digoxin: Increased risk of low magnesium levels.
  • Warfarin: May increase bleeding risk by affecting blood clotting time.
  • Saquinavir and Methotrexate: May increase their levels in your blood.
  • Sucralfate: Can decrease Rabeprazole absorption; take them at different times.
  • Rilpivirine and Atazanavir: Rabeprazole can significantly decrease the effectiveness of these antiviral drugs, which could be life-threatening.
