Prostodin
Prostodin 125 is a Carboprost injection manufactured by Astra Zeneca, available in Nepal. It is a synthetic prostaglandin analogue used to stimulate uterine contractility.
Prostodin 125 Injection is used for:
- Pregnancy termination in the 2nd trimester (Abortion): To induce uterine contractions for expulsion of the products of conception.
- Postpartum Uterine Bleeding: To achieve myometrial contractions responsible for placental hemostasis and control bleeding after childbirth.
Description
- Transient fever may be observed with treatment, possibly due to carboprost’s effect on hypothalamic thermoregulation.
- Pre-treatment or concomitant use with antiemetic and antidiarrheal agents is recommended to decrease gastrointestinal (GI) side effects.
- Rare cases of cardiovascular collapse have been reported with prostaglandins.
- Nervousness, epistaxis, sleep disorder, hyperthermia, flushing, asthma, wheezing, coughing, chest pain, hypertension, syncope, palpitation, tachycardia, chest tightness, anxiety, chills/shivering, dizziness, drowsiness, dystonia, faintness, headache, lethargy, lightheadedness, vertigo, rash, breast tenderness, dysmenorrhea-like pain, hot flashes, dry throat, taste alterations, uterine bleeding (excessive).
Local Side Effects:
- Injection site pain
Musculoskeletal/Other Pain:
- Backache, leg cramps, muscular pain, paresthesia
Sensory:
- Blurred vision, eye pain, eyelid twitching, tinnitus
Respiratory:
- Bronchospasm, dyspnea, hiccups
Mechanism of Action
Carboprost, a synthetic analogue of naturally occurring prostaglandin F2α, directly stimulates uterine contractility. This action leads to the expulsion of the products of conception during pregnancy termination. In cases of postpartum hemorrhage, it produces myometrial contractions crucial for achieving placental hemostasis and controlling bleeding. It is also specifically used to induce abortion between 13-20 weeks of pregnancy.
