Proate 200
Proate 200 Tablet, manufactured by Nepal Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., contains Sodium Valproate (valproic acid) in a combination of 133.5mg + 58mg. It is used to treat various conditions, including epilepsy, anxiety disorders, migraine, and bipolar disorder.
Key Uses and Dosage
Proate 200 is prescribed for:
- Epilepsy: This includes various seizure types like partial seizures, absence seizures (petit mal), generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal), myoclonic seizures, atonic seizures, and mixed seizures.
- Anxiety Disorder
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Febrile Convulsion
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Panic Attack
- Migraine (for prevention, not acute treatment)
- Bipolar Disorder (for manic episodes)
Description
Proate 200 can be taken with meals to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Starting with a low dose and using enteric-coated formulations can also help.
Contraindications
Do not use Proate 200 if you have:
- Pre-existing or family history of hepatic dysfunction
- Active liver disease
- Porphyria
- Mitochondrial or urea cycle disorders
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Pregnancy
Precautions
- Children under 2 years, those with congenital metabolic disorders, organic brain disease, or severe seizure disorders are at an increased risk of hepatotoxicity.
- Use with caution in patients with HIV or cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection or SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus).
- If you experience excessive somnolence, decreased food/fluid intake, or unexplained lethargy, vomiting, or changes in mental status, contact your doctor immediately. These could be signs of hyperammonemic encephalopathy or other serious issues.
- Gradual withdrawal is important when discontinuing this medication or switching to other anti-epileptic drugs.
- Consider vitamin supplementation if you are immobilized or have insufficient sun exposure or calcium intake.
- Seek medical advice immediately if you experience symptoms of pancreatitis (e.g., abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, anorexia), or signs of blood and liver toxicity.
Monitoring
Your doctor will monitor:
- Liver function tests (LFTs) before and during the first six months of treatment.
- Blood cell count (including platelets), bleeding time, and coagulation tests before starting therapy, before surgery, and if you experience spontaneous bruising or bleeding.
- For atypical behavior (e.g., suicidal ideation and behavior) during and after therapy.
