Peptica Gel Gel: Key Information

Generic Name: Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicon

Availability: Nepal

Uses (Indications): Peptica Gel Gel is used to treat conditions such as:

  • Hyperacidity
  • Gastric ulcers
  • Duodenal ulcers
  • Gastritis

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults: Chew 1-2 tablets or take 2-4 teaspoonfuls (tsf) after meals and at bedtime as needed. Do not exceed 4 doses per day.
  • Children & Renal Patients: Dosing information for these groups is not provided.
  • Administration: Take after meals and at bedtime. For optimal results, follow each dose with a half glass of water or other liquid.

Contraindications: Peptica Gel Gel should not be used in cases of:

  • Hypophosphataemia
  • Renal failure (due to Simethicon)
  • Severely debilitated patients (due to Simethicon)
  • First trimester of pregnancy (due to Simethicon)

Precautions: Use with caution in patients with:

  • Renal dysfunction
  • Those on a low phosphate diet
  • Avoid prolonged use.

Drug Interactions:

  • Aluminium Hydroxide:
    • Increased absorption with: Citrates or ascorbic acid.

    • Decreased absorption of: Tetracyclines and biphosphonates.
    • It is recommended to separate the administration of magnesium hydroxide and other medications by approximately 2 hours.
  • Simethicon: No significant drug interactions are well-documented.

Adverse Effects (Side Effects): Common side effects of the combination of Aluminium Oxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, and Simethicon may include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Mechanism of Action:

  • Aluminum Hydroxide: Works by neutralizing stomach hydrochloric acid, forming aluminum chloride (AlCl3) and water, thereby increasing gastric pH.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide: Promotes bowel evacuation by drawing fluid into the colon (osmotic retention), which distends the colon and increases peristaltic activity. It also reacts with hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride.
  • Simethicone: Reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal system, helping to disperse and prevent gas pockets.
