How to Use OPALEN Gel
Adults: Apply a small, pea-sized amount of the gel sparingly to your entire face once daily at night after cleansing with a non-medicated cleanser.
Important: This medication is for topical use only.
Precautions and Warnings
- Avoid using if you’re hypersensitive to Adapalene.
- Use with caution if you have sunburn or eczema.
- Limit exposure to sunlight or UV irradiation while using OPALEN Gel.
- Keep the gel away from your eyes, lips, nostrils, and mucous membranes.
- Do not apply to cuts, abrasions, scaly or flaky skin, or sunburned patches.
- Be careful when using with products containing sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid, as increased irritation can occur.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medication. It’s not known if Adapalene is excreted in breast milk.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Very Common (>10%): Dryness (1-45%), scaling (1-44%), burning/stinging (4-29%), erythema (0.5-26%).
- Common (1-10%): Skin discomfort (6%), pruritus (2%), desquamation (2%), sunburn (1%).
- Less Common (<1%): Acne flare, conjunctivitis, contact dermatitis, eczema, eyelid edema, rash, skin discoloration.
How it Works
Adapalene works by binding to specific retinoic acid nuclear receptors. This process helps to normalize the differentiation of follicular epithelial cells, which in turn reduces the formation of microcomedones (tiny blocked pores that are the precursor to acne lesions).
