Description
Uses:
- Acid reflux / GERD
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Part of combination therapy for H. pylori
Mechanism of Action:
It inhibits the proton pump (H+/K+ ATPase) in stomach lining cells, reducing acid secretion.
Dosage:
- Typically 20 mg once daily before food, preferably in the morning
- Can be placed on the tongue to dissolve without water
Side Effects:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Long-term use risks: B12 deficiency, magnesium loss, increased fracture risk
Precautions:
- Not for immediate relief of heartburn
- Long-term use should be monitored
- May interact with certain drugs like clopidogrel
