Normogel Chewable Tablet contains Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide. It’s used to relieve heartburn, indigestion, hyperacidity, reflux oesophagitis, peptic ulcer symptoms, and constipation.

The active ingredients work by neutralizing stomach acid and, in the case of magnesium hydroxide, also acting as a laxative.

Always take it as directed by your doctor. Common side effects include constipation (aluminium hydroxide) and diarrhea (magnesium hydroxide). Be aware of potential drug interactions; take Normogel 2-3 hours apart from other medications.

What is Normogel Used For?

Normogel Chewable Tablet provides relief from:

  • Heartburn
  • Reflux oesophagitis (acid reflux causing irritation of the esophagus)
  • Hyperacidity (excess stomach acid)
  • Peptic ulcer symptoms
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation (Magnesium Hydroxide acts as a laxative)

How Does Normogel Work?

Normogel combines two active ingredients to tackle digestive issues:

  • Aluminium Hydroxide: Neutralizes excess stomach acid (hydrochloric acid), turning it into a salt and water, which helps reduce acidity and heartburn.
  • Magnesium Hydroxide: Also reduces stomach acid by reacting with hydrochloric acid. Additionally, it draws water into the bowels, increasing peristalsis (muscle contractions) and promoting bowel movements, which helps relieve constipation.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose:

  • For Gastric Hyperacidity & Heartburn: Up to 1 gram per day.
  • For Hyperphosphatemia (high phosphate levels) in chronic kidney failure: Up to 10 grams per day, divided into doses taken with meals.
  • General Use (Antacid/Laxative): 10-20 mL (of suspension, or equivalent in tablets) taken orally between meals and at bedtime.

Child Dose: Please consult a doctor for appropriate dosage for children.

Renal Dose: Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Your doctor will adjust the dose if necessary.

How to Take Normogel

Normogel Chewable Tablets can be taken with or without food.

Important Considerations & Precautions

  • Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to aluminium salts.
  • Use with caution if you have:
    • Chronic kidney impairment
    • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
    • Edema (swelling)
    • Cirrhosis (liver disease)
    • Are on a low sodium diet
    • Have experienced recent gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Drug Interactions: To minimize interactions, take Normogel 2-3 hours before or after other medications.
    • Aluminium Hydroxide can reduce the absorption of many drugs, including certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones, cephalosporins), allopurinol, corticosteroids, iron supplements, and more.
    • Magnesium Hydroxide can also decrease the absorption of tetracyclines and bisphosphonates.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Normogel. It’s unknown if it excretes into breast milk.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects of Aluminium Hydroxide + Magnesium Hydroxide include:

  • Chalky taste
  • Constipation (more common with Aluminium Hydroxide)
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fecal impaction

Less common side effects can include:

  • Nausea, Vomiting
  • Aluminum intoxication (with prolonged high doses, especially in kidney impairment)
  • Hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels)
  • Osteomalacia (softening of bones)
  • Diarrhea (more common with Magnesium Hydroxide)
  • Hypermagnesemia (high magnesium levels, especially in kidney impairment)
