Nevimune
Nevimune Tablet, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., contains Nevirapine 200mg, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used to treat HIV infection. It works by directly binding to and disrupting the catalytic site of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, thereby blocking viral replication.

Nevimune is typically taken with or without food as part of a combination therapy with other antiretrovirals.
- Adults:
- Initiate with 200 mg once daily for the first 14 days.
- If no rash develops, increase the dose to 200 mg twice daily (bid).
- If treatment is interrupted for more than 7 days, reintroduction should start at the lower dose for the first 14 days.
- Children (Combined with other antiretrovirals):
- 2 months to 8 years: Start with 4 mg/kg once daily for the first 14 days. If no rash occurs, increase to 7 mg/kg twice daily (bid).
- 8 to 16 years: Start with 4 mg/kg once daily for 14 days, then increase to 4 mg/kg twice daily (bid).
- Maximum daily dose for children is 400 mg.
- If treatment is interrupted for more than 7 days, reintroduction should start at the lower dose for the first 14 days.
Special Populations
- Renal Impairment (Hemodialysis): A further 200mg dose is recommended after dialysis.
- Pregnancy: Use with caution during pregnancy.
- Hepatic Impairment: Not recommended in severe hepatic impairment.
Important Precautions & Contraindications
Do not use Nevimune if you have:
- Hypersensitivity to Nevirapine.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
- Are breastfeeding.
Use with caution if you have:
- Renal or hepatic insufficiency.
- Pregnancy.
Monitoring is crucial: Liver function should be monitored periodically. Treatment should be interrupted if severe hepatotoxicity or life-threatening skin reactions develop.
Potential Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Skin rash
- Nausea, vomiting
- Headache
- Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs)
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
Potentially Fatal Side Effects: Severe and life-threatening hepatotoxic reactions (liver damage) and skin reactions can occur.
Drug Interactions
Nevirapine can interact with other medications, potentially leading to increased or reduced drug levels and effects.
- Increased levels/effects: When used with drugs extensively metabolized by CYP3A.
- Reduced levels/effects: Methadone.
