Description
Nebanol combines two antibiotics with different mechanisms of action to provide broad-spectrum coverage:
- Neomycin: An aminoglycoside that binds to the 30S subunits of bacterial ribosomes. This binding inhibits protein synthesis, thereby disrupting DNA synthesis. Neomycin is effective against many Gram-negative aerobes and some strains of staphylococci.
- Bacitracin: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It is active against many Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., staphylococci, streptococci, corynebacteria, and clostridia) and some Gram-negative species (e.g., Neisseria and Haemophilus influenzae).
The combination of these two agents in topical preparations creates a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect.
