Megacef

Megacef 400mg Tablet, produced by S.R. Drug Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., contains Cefixime as its active ingredient. It’s available in Nepal, with other forms including 100mg and 200mg DT tablets and D-SY.


 

Indications

 

Megacef is prescribed for various bacterial infections, such as:

  • Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, Pharyngitis, Sinusitis, Otitis media, Tonsillitis, Acute Bronchitis, and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis.
  • Other Susceptible Infections: Typhoid fever, Soft tissue infections, and Gonococcal urethritis.

Description

Megacef can be taken with or without food. To help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort, it’s often recommended to take it with food or milk.


 

Contraindications

 

Megacef is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.


 

Precautions

 

Use caution if you have:

  • A history of allergy to penicillins.
  • Pregnancy or are lactating.
  • Renal failure.
  • Gastrointestinal disease.

It’s currently unknown if the drug is excreted in breast milk during lactation.


 

Interactions

 

  • Increased concentrations of Cefixime can occur when taken with probenecid.
  • Potentially Fatal: Cefixime may increase prothrombin time when administered with anticoagulants.

 

Adverse Effects

 

A common side effect (greater than 10%) is diarrhea (16%).

Other less frequent but possible side effects include:

  • Abdominal pain, Candidiasis, Dizziness, Dyspepsia, Elevated transaminases, Eosinophilia, Erythema multiforme, Fever, Flatulence, Headache, Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN), Increased creatinine, Leukopenia, Nausea, Prolonged prothrombin time (PT), Pruritus, Pseudomembranous colitis, Rash, Serum sickness-like reaction, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Thrombocytopenia, Urticaria, Vaginitis, and Vomiting.
  • Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis.

 

Mechanism of Action

 

Cefixime works by binding to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall. This action inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, disrupting the cell wall’s assembly and leading to bacterial cell death.
