Description
Lospas Tablet, containing Hyoscine Butylbromide 10mg, is manufactured by Curex Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. and is available in Nepal. This medication is primarily used to relieve spasms and pain in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts.
Dosage Information:
- Adults (Oral): For gastrointestinal or genitourinary spasms, the usual dose is 20 mg, 4 times daily.
- Adults (Parenteral – IM/IV): A dose of 20 mg can be given intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV), and may be repeated after 30 minutes if necessary.
- The maximum daily dosage should not exceed 100 mg.
- Children (6-12 years, Oral): For gastrointestinal or genitourinary spasms, children in this age group typically take 10 mg, three times daily.
When You Shouldn’t Take Lospas (Contraindications):
Do NOT use Lospas if you have any of the following conditions:
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Acute haemorrhage (severe bleeding)
- Paralytic ileus (a condition where the bowel muscles don’t work properly)
- Tachycardia (rapid heart rate) due to cardiac insufficiency
- Myasthenia gravis (a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease)
Important Precautions:
You should use Lospas with caution and inform your doctor if you have:
- Hepatic (liver) or renal (kidney) disease
- Pyloric stenosis (narrowing of the opening from the stomach to the small intestine)
- Urinary retention or prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
- Psychosis or seizure disorders
- Ulcerative colitis
- Coronary artery disease, tachyarrhythmias, heart failure, or hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Special caution is advised for elderly individuals, children, pregnant individuals, and those who are breastfeeding.
Interactions with Other Medications:
- Taking Lospas with alcohol or other CNS depressants can lead to additive sedative effects.
- The effects of Lospas may be reduced when taken with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (such as donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, tacrine).
- Potentially Fatal Interaction: The effect of Hyoscine Butylbromide can be potentiated (made stronger) by other anticholinergic drugs and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).
Possible Side Effects:
Side effects of Hyoscine Butylbromide can include:
- Common: Flushing, postural hypotension (dizziness when standing up), tachycardia (fast heart rate), and fibrillation. Rarely, psychotic reactions.
- Neurological: Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, memory loss, tremor, weakness.
- Skin: Dry skin, erythema (redness), increased sensitivity to light, rash.
- Digestive: Bloatedness, constipation, dry throat, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), nausea, vomiting, xerostomia (dry mouth).
- Urinary: Dysuria (painful urination), urinary retention.
- Eye-related: Impaired accommodation (difficulty focusing), blurred vision, cycloplegia (paralysis of the eye’s focusing muscle), dryness, narrow-angle glaucoma, increased intraocular pain, itching, photophobia (light sensitivity), pupil dilation.
- Other: Dry nose, decreased diaphoresis (sweating), heat intolerance.
Potentially Fatal Side Effects: In severe cases, Hyoscine Butylbromide can lead to CNS depression, coma, and circulatory and respiratory failure.
How Lospas Works (Mechanism of Action):
Hyoscine Butylbromide works by competitively blocking muscarinic receptors in the body. This action affects both the central nervous system and peripheral body systems, leading to the relaxation of smooth muscle and a reduction in gastric and intestinal motility (movement).
