Description

Losita H is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients:

1. Losartan (an Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker – ARB): This works by blocking a substance in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II normally causes blood vessels to tighten and narrow, which increases blood pressure. By blocking its action, Losartan helps to relax and widen blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and making it easier for the heart to pump blood.
2. Hydrochlorothiazide (a Thiazide Diuretic – “water pill”): This works by increasing the amount of water and salt the kidneys remove from the body through urine. This reduction in fluid volume helps to lower blood pressure.

Uses of Losita H:

Losita H is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is typically prescribed when a single medication (either Losartan or Hydrochlorothiazide alone) is not sufficient to effectively control blood pressure.

It may also be used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and a heart condition called left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart’s main pumping chamber).

How it Works (Combined Effect): The combination of Losartan and Hydrochlorothiazide provides a dual mechanism to lower blood pressure:

• Losartan relaxes blood vessels.
• Hydrochlorothiazide reduces fluid volume in the body. This combined action generally leads to a more effective reduction in blood pressure than either drug used alone.

Dosage and Administration:

• Losita H is typically taken once daily, usually in the morning to avoid frequent nighttime urination due to the diuretic component.
• It can be taken with or without food.
• The specific dosage will be determined by your doctor based on your individual needs and how your blood pressure responds. Common strengths often include 50mg Losartan / 12.5mg Hydrochlorothiazide or 100mg Losartan / 25mg Hydrochlorothiazide.
• Do not stop taking Losita H suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well. Abruptly stopping blood pressure medication can lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure, raising the risk of serious complications like heart attack or stroke.

Common Side Effects: Common side effects of Losita H can include:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly)
• Headache
• Fatigue or tiredness
• Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
• Back pain, joint pain
• Stuffy or runny nose, cough (though less common than with ACE inhibitors)
• Increased blood uric acid (which can worsen gout)
• Electrolyte imbalances (e.g., changes in potassium, sodium, magnesium levels)

Important Considerations:

• Monitoring: Your doctor will likely monitor your blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels (especially potassium) regularly while you are on this medication.
• Dehydration: Due to the diuretic effect, you might experience increased urination, which can lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids as advised by your doctor.
• Potassium Levels: While Losartan can sometimes increase potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide can decrease it, monitoring is crucial as imbalances can occur. Avoid potassium supplements or excessive potassium-rich foods unless specifically advised by your doctor.
• Kidney and Liver Problems: Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver disease. It’s generally not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment or anuria (no urine production).
• Pregnancy: Losita H (and other ARBs) can cause serious harm or death to the developing fetus if used during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It is generally contraindicated in pregnancy. Inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
• Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it can further lower blood pressure and increase dizziness.
• Driving/Operating Machinery: Be cautious, especially at the beginning of treatment, as it can cause dizziness.
• Drug Interactions: Losita H can interact with many other medications, including:
  • NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs like ibuprofen, naproxen) – can reduce the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase the risk of kidney problems.
  • Lithium – can increase lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
  • Other blood pressure medications, including ACE inhibitors (like Lisinopril) and direct renin inhibitors (like Aliskiren) – co-administration is generally not recommended, especially in diabetic patients, due to increased risk of hyperkalemia, hypotension, and kidney issues.
  • Corticosteroids.
  • Certain medications for diabetes.
