What is Levoflox 500 Tablet Used For?

Levoflox 500 Tablet contains Levofloxacin, a powerful antibiotic that fights various bacterial infections. It’s prescribed for:

• Respiratory Infections: Including pneumonia (community-acquired and hospital-acquired), acute bacterial sinusitis, and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis.
  • Note: For sinusitis and chronic bronchitis, your doctor typically reserves this medication for when other options aren’t suitable.
• Skin & Soft Tissue Infections: Both simple and complex skin infections.
• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including uncomplicated and complicated UTIs, and kidney infections (acute pyelonephritis).
  • Note: For uncomplicated UTIs, this medication is usually reserved for when other treatments aren’t appropriate.
• Prostate Infections: Chronic bacterial prostatitis.
• Specific Serious Infections: Post-exposure treatment for anthrax and for treating/preventing plague (in adults and children aged 6 months or older).

How to Take Levoflox 500 Tablet

Adult Dosing:

• Doses vary depending on the infection. For example, for pneumonia, it’s typically 500 mg by mouth or IV once daily for 7-14 days, or 750 mg once daily for 5 days. Your doctor will prescribe the correct dose and duration.

Child Dosing (for specific severe infections like anthrax/plague and some respiratory infections):

• Doses are based on the child’s weight. For instance, 16 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours for anthrax prophylaxis (up to 50 kg body weight).

Important Administration Notes:

• Tablets: You can take Levoflox 500 with or without food.
• Oral Solution: If you have the oral solution, take it on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
• Always drink plenty of fluids while on this medication.
• IV Administration: If given intravenously, it must be infused slowly (over 60 to 90 minutes) to avoid a sudden drop in blood pressure. It is never given as a rapid injection.
• Kidney Impairment: Your doctor will adjust the dose if you have kidney problems.

Important Considerations & Warnings

• Do not use if you are allergic to levofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics, or if you are under 18 years old (unless specifically prescribed for certain severe infections).
• Use with caution if you have conditions like seizure disorders, certain heart rhythm problems (prolonged QT interval), or diabetes. Your doctor will monitor you closely.
• Avoid excessive sun or artificial UV light exposure as this medication can increase sun sensitivity.
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
• This medication carries a risk of tendon problems, including tendonitis and rupture. If you experience any tendon pain or swelling, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
• Drug Interactions: Levoflox can interact with various medications, including antacids, blood thinners (like warfarin), corticosteroids, and certain NSAIDs. Always tell your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, headache, diarrhea, insomnia, and dizziness. Less common but more serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), heart rhythm issues, liver problems, or severe skin reactions.
