Lancus Capsule

Description

Lancus Capsule contains Lansoprazole 30mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in your stomach. It’s manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals Limited and is available in Nepal, typically in packs of 10 capsules with a retail price of NPR 9.06.

How to Take Lancus Capsule

Always take Lancus Capsule on an empty stomach, before meals.

Adult Dosing

• Peptic Ulcer:
  • Duodenal Ulcer: 30 mg once daily for up to 4 weeks.
  • Gastric Ulcer: 30 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.
  • Maintenance: 15 mg once daily.
• Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:
  • Starting Dose: 60 mg once daily. Doses over 120 mg daily should be split into two doses.
• Acid-Related Dyspepsia: 15-30 mg once daily for 2-4 weeks.
• Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
  • Initial: 15-30 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.
  • Maintenance: 15-30 mg once daily, as needed.
• Prophylaxis of NSAID-Induced Ulcers: 15-30 mg once daily.
• H. pylori Infection: 30 mg twice daily for 1 week, typically combined with two antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin and amoxicillin, or clarithromycin and metronidazole).
• Erosive Oesophagitis:
  • Initial: 30 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks; an additional 8 weeks may be given if not healed.
  • Maintenance: 15 mg once daily.
• NSAID-Associated Ulceration: 30 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks.
• Elderly: No dosage adjustment needed.
• Severe Hepatic Impairment: Maximum 30 mg per day.

Child Dosing

• Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease & Erosive Oesophagitis:
  • 1-11 years:
    • < 30 kg: 15 mg once daily for up to 12 weeks.
    • > 30 kg: 30 mg once daily for up to 12 weeks. Doses can be increased to 30 mg twice daily if symptoms persist after 2+ weeks.
  • 12-17 years: 15 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks. (For erosive oesophagitis, 30 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.)

Renal Impairment

No dosage adjustment is needed for kidney problems.

Important Considerations

Contraindications

Do not take Lancus Capsule if you have a known hypersensitivity to lansoprazole or any of its ingredients.

Precautions

• Use with caution if you have hepatic impairment (liver problems).
• Your doctor should rule out gastric malignancy (stomach cancer) before you start treatment.
• Pregnancy and Lactation: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss this with your doctor. It’s not known if lansoprazole passes into breast milk, so nursing is generally not recommended.

Potential Drug Interactions

Lancus Capsule can interact with other medications. Be sure to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially:

• Diuretics and Digoxin: Increased risk of low magnesium levels.
• Erlotinib, Dasatinib, Lapatinib: May decrease their effectiveness.
• Itraconazole, Ketoconazole: May decrease their absorption.
• Cilostazol, Methotrexate: May increase their levels in the blood.
• Antacids, Sucralfate: May reduce the absorption of Lancus Capsule.
• Rilpivirine, Atazanavir: May significantly decrease their levels, potentially leading to a loss of effectiveness (potentially fatal).

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects (1-10% of users) include:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Constipation
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain

Less common side effects (<1%) can include anxiety, angina, palpitations, syncope, edema, anorexia, dry mouth, flatulence, melena, myalgia, tinnitus, and allergic reactions.
