Hysco Tablet, containing the active ingredient Hyoscine Butylbromide, is an antispasmodic medication manufactured by Chemidrug Industries Pvt. Ltd. You can find Hysco in Nepal.

Uses (Indications)

Hysco Tablet helps relieve spasms and associated pain in the:

  • Gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines)
  • Genitourinary tract (urinary and reproductive organs)
    • This includes relief from abdominal pain.

How it Works (Mechanism of Action)

Hyoscine Butylbromide works by blocking muscarinic receptors. This action helps to relax smooth muscles and reduce excessive movement in your stomach and intestines.

Dosage Information

Adults:

  • Oral: Take 20 mg four times daily for gastrointestinal or genitourinary spasms.
  • Injection (IM/IV): A 20 mg dose can be given via intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection. This dose can be repeated after 30 minutes if necessary.
    • Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 100 mg per day.

Children:

  • Oral (6-12 years): Give 10 mg three times daily for gastrointestinal or genitourinary spasms.

Important Considerations

Do Not Use If You Have (Contraindications):

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Acute hemorrhage (severe bleeding)
  • Paralytic ileus (bowel obstruction)
  • Tachycardia (fast heart rate) due to cardiac insufficiency (heart problems)
  • Myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disorder)

Use with Caution If You Have (Precautions):

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Pyloric stenosis (narrowing of the stomach outlet)
  • Urinary retention or prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
  • Psychosis or seizure disorders
  • Ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease)
  • Coronary artery disease, tachyarrhythmias (fast irregular heartbeats), heart failure, or hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Special populations: Elderly individuals, children, pregnant, or breastfeeding women.

Potential Drug Interactions

  • Increased Sedation: Be cautious when using Hysco with alcohol or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants, as this can increase sedative effects.
  • Reduced Effects: Hysco’s effects might be lessened if taken with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (medications like donepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine, tacrine, often used for Alzheimer’s disease).
  • Potentially Fatal Interaction: The effects of Hysco can be significantly increased (potentiated) by other anticholinergic drugs and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).

Possible Side Effects (Adverse Effects)

Common side effects include:

  • General: Flushing, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, memory loss, weakness, tremor, heat intolerance, decreased sweating.
  • Cardiovascular: Postural hypotension (dizziness when standing), tachycardia (fast heart rate), fibrillation.
  • Skin: Dry skin, redness, increased sensitivity to light, rash.
  • Gastrointestinal: Bloatedness, constipation, dry throat, difficulty swallowing, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth.
  • Urinary: Painful urination, difficulty urinating, urinary retention.
  • Ophthalmic (Eye): Impaired accommodation (difficulty focusing), blurred vision, cycloplegia (paralysis of eye muscles), dry eyes, narrow-angle glaucoma (worsening), increased eye pressure, itching, light sensitivity, pupil dilation.
  • Other: Dry nose.

Rare but Serious Side Effects: Psychotic reactions.

Potentially Fatal Side Effects: Severe central nervous system (CNS) depression, coma, circulatory failure, and respiratory failure.
