Humalog Cartridge (Lispro) 100 IU/ML contains Insulin Lispro, a rapid-acting human insulin analog. It is a man-made version of the insulin naturally produced by the human pancreas, but with a modified amino acid sequence that allows for a much faster onset of action. Unlike regular human insulin, which tends to form aggregates (hexamers) that delay absorption, insulin lispro’s altered structure prevents this hexamer formation. This means it dissociates into individual molecules more quickly after subcutaneous injection, leading to rapid absorption into the bloodstream.
Once absorbed, Humalog acts similarly to the body’s natural insulin:
- Facilitates glucose uptake: It stimulates muscle and fat cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
- Inhibits hepatic glucose production: It signals the liver to stop producing and releasing glucose into the blood.
- Promotes energy storage: It encourages the synthesis of glycogen (stored glucose) in the liver and muscles, and helps with fat storage.
- Inhibits breakdown: It helps prevent the breakdown of fats (lipolysis) and proteins (proteolysis).
Humalog’s rapid onset of action (typically within 10-20 minutes after injection) and shorter duration of activity (around 4-6 hours) make it ideal for controlling post-meal blood sugar spikes. It is usually administered 15 minutes before a meal or within 20 minutes after starting a meal. This “mealtime” or “bolus” insulin is often used in conjunction with a longer-acting (basal) insulin to provide comprehensive blood sugar control throughout the day and night for individuals with diabetes. It comes in cartridges designed for use with compatible insulin pens.
