Hipril 5mg, when it contains Ramipril 5mg, is also an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Similar to lisinopril, ramipril works by preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, leading to the relaxation and widening of blood vessels. This action reduces the workload on the heart and lowers blood pressure, thereby improving blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart.
Ramipril is commonly used for long-term management of cardiovascular conditions. It helps to prevent future heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems, especially in individuals with existing heart disease or diabetes. It can also improve survival rates after a heart attack by reducing the weakening of heart muscles. Ramipril is typically taken once or twice daily, with or without food. The first dose might cause dizziness, so it’s sometimes advised to take it at bedtime initially. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels (especially potassium) is important during treatment.
Common side effects include dizziness, dry cough, headache, fatigue, and sometimes an increase in potassium levels. Alcohol consumption can amplify the blood-pressure-lowering effect and should be discussed with a doctor. Ramipril is generally contraindicated during pregnancy and caution is advised during breastfeeding.
