Description
Fertomid 25mg is a medication primarily used to treat infertility in both women and men. Its active ingredient is Clomiphene Citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs known as Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) or ovulation stimulators.
Mechanism of Action: Fertomid 25mg works by acting on the pituitary gland to stimulate the release of gonadotropins, specifically Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH).
- In women: Increased FSH and LH levels promote the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, ultimately leading to ovulation (the release of a mature egg from the ovaries). This is particularly beneficial for women with anovulatory infertility (not ovulating) or those with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which can cause irregular or absent menstrual cycles.
- In men: In some cases, Fertomid 25mg is used off-label to stimulate hormone production, leading to increased testosterone levels and improved sperm production and count, thereby addressing male infertility.
Uses:
- Female Infertility: The primary use is to induce ovulation in women who are not ovulating regularly or at all, including those with PCOS.
- Male Infertility: Used off-label to increase sperm production and testosterone levels in men with certain types of infertility.
Dosage and Administration: Fertomid 25mg is taken orally, usually as directed by a physician. For women, it’s typically taken for 5 days, starting on Day 2-5 of the menstrual cycle. The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the doctor based on the individual’s condition and response. It’s crucial to follow the prescribed schedule and dosage strictly.
Benefits:
- Increases the chances of successful pregnancy in women with ovulatory disorders.
- Promotes the development and release of mature eggs.
- Can improve sperm count and quality in some male infertility cases.
- Compared to some other fertility treatments, it may not greatly increase the chances of multiple pregnancies, though there’s a slightly increased chance of twins (around 5 out of 100 women).
Potential Side Effects: Common side effects are often mild and may include:
- Hot flashes (flushing)
- Headache
- Nausea, vomiting
- Dizziness, lightheadedness
- Breast pain or tenderness (can also cause breast enlargement in males)
- Bloating, lower stomach pain
- Mood changes, irritability, depression
- Blurred vision or visual disturbances (flashes, spots) – if this occurs, activities requiring clear vision should be avoided.
Less common but serious side effects can include:
- Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS): Symptoms include severe lower abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, difficulty breathing, and enlarged ovaries. This requires immediate medical attention.
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing).
- Signs of stroke (weakness, numbness, paralysis on one side, slurred speech, sudden blurred vision).
- Liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes).
- Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain).
Contraindications and Precautions: Fertomid 25mg is not recommended for use in:
- Pregnant women.
- Individuals with known allergy to clomiphene citrate.
- Patients with liver disease or a history of liver problems.
- Women with unusual menstrual bleeding of unknown cause.
- Individuals with hormone-dependent cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian).
- Patients with certain types of ovarian cysts (except PCOS-related cysts).
Caution is advised for patients with:
- A history of fits or seizures.

- Swollen or enlarged ovaries.
- High blood fat levels (hypertriglyceridemia).
- Kidney disease.
Drug Interactions: Patients should inform their doctor about all other medications they are taking, including herbal and complementary medicines. Some medications may interact with Fertomid 25mg, requiring dose adjustments or careful monitoring. For example, it may alter the effectiveness of anticoagulant medications like warfarin and antidiabetic medications.
Important Notes:
- Fertomid 25mg is not a cure for infertility but can enhance the chance of getting pregnant by inducing ovulation.
- Treatment is often limited to a specific number of cycles. If pregnancy does not occur, other fertility treatments may be explored.
- Patients may be advised to track ovulation at home to help with planning intercourse or other fertility treatments.
- Alcohol consumption should be discussed with a doctor as interactions are unknown.
- It’s important to keep Fertomid 25mg out of reach of children and store it below 25°C.
