Dilge Syrup is taken orally.

Important Considerations

Do Not Use If You Have:

  • Intestinal obstruction
  • Fecal impaction
  • Renal failure
  • Appendicitis

Use With Caution If You Have:

  • A colostomy or ileostomy.
  • An electrolyte imbalance.

Pregnancy and Lactation: If you’re pregnant, exercise caution. For nursing mothers, use of Magnesium Hydroxide appears to be safe.

Potential Drug Interactions: Magnesium hydroxide can decrease the absorption of certain medications, including:

  • Tetracyclines (a type of antibiotic)
  • Bisphosphonates (medications for bone conditions)

To avoid interactions, it’s recommended to separate the administration of Dilge Syrup and these other drugs by about 2 hours. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medications you’re taking.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of Magnesium Hydroxide may include:

  • Abdominal cramping
  • Diarrhea
  • Electrolyte imbalance
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Respiratory depression (slowed breathing)
  • Hypermagnesaemia (too much magnesium in the blood, especially in patients with kidney impairment)
  • Paralytic ileus (a condition where the bowel doesn’t move properly)

How Dilge Syrup Works

Magnesium hydroxide works in two ways:

  1. As a laxative: It draws water into the intestines through osmosis, which softens stools and increases their volume, stimulating bowel movements.
  2. As an antacid: It reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form magnesium chloride, which neutralizes stomach acid and helps relieve heartburn and indigestion.
