- Potentially Fatal: Pseudomembranous colitis.
Mechanism of Action: Cefixime works by binding to one or more of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall. This action inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, which is crucial for bacterial cell wall formation. By inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly, Cefixime ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.
