Clinall Gel is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to clindamycin.
Precautions
- This product is not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use.
- Avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps while using this gel. Wear sunscreen daily.
- Lactation: Excretion in breast milk is unknown; use with caution.
Interactions
- May enhance the action of neuromuscular blocking agents (e.g., atracurium).
- May antagonize the effects of parasympathomimetics.
- May competitively inhibit the effects of macrolides, ketolides, streptogramins, linezolid, and chloramphenicol.
- May lead to increased coagulation tests (prothrombin time/INR) and/or bleeding with vitamin K antagonists (e.g., warfarin, acenocoumarol, fluindione).
Adverse Effects
- Common (greater than 10%): Dryness (18-23%), Oiliness (1-18%), Erythema (7-16%), Peeling (7-11%), Burning/itching (6-11%).
- Less Common (1-10%): Headache (3%).
Mechanism of Action
Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby blocking the transpeptidation or translocation reactions in susceptible organisms. This results in stunted bacterial cell growth.
