Description
Ciplactin Syrup is used for several conditions, including:
- Rash and pruritus (itching) associated with various conditions.
- Appetite stimulation and treatment of anorexia nervosa.
- Management of certain endocrine disorders like Cushing’s and Nelson’s syndrome, acromegaly, and hyperprolactinemia.
- Treatment and prevention of migraine and other vascular headaches.
- Addressing antidepressant-induced anorgasmia.
Dosage Information
You can take Ciplactin with or without food. Taking it with meals may help reduce any stomach discomfort.
Adult Dose
- Allergic Conditions:
- Initially: 4 mg three times a day (tid), adjusting as needed.
- Usual: 12-16 mg daily, divided into 3-4 doses.
- Maximum: 32 mg/day.
- Treatment and Prophylaxis of Migraine and Other Vascular Headaches:
- 4 mg, which you can repeat after 30 minutes.
- Do not exceed 8 mg within a 4- to 6-hour period.
- Maintenance: 4 mg every 4-6 hours.
Child Dose
- Allergic Conditions:
- 2-6 years: 2 mg two or three times a day (bid or tid). Maximum: 12 mg daily.
- 7-14 years: 4 mg two or three times a day (bid or tid). Maximum: 16 mg daily.
- Migraine Prophylaxis:
- Under 3 years: The safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established for this age group.
- Over 3 years and Adolescents: 0.2-0.4 mg/kg/day orally, divided twice a day (BID). Do not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day.
Important Considerations
Contraindications
Do not use Ciplactin Syrup if you have:
- Narrow-angle glaucoma.
- An acute asthmatic attack.
- Bladder neck obstruction.
- Stenosing peptic ulcer.
- Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) obstruction.
- Are currently undergoing MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor) therapy.
- Hypersensitivity to Cyproheptadine HCl.
- This medication is contraindicated in neonates and during lactation.
Precautions
Use Ciplactin Syrup with caution if you are:
- Elderly.
- Performing tasks that require mental alertness.
- Experiencing symptomatic prostate hypertrophy.
- Have epilepsy or alcoholism.
- Pregnant.
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy: Use with caution.
- Lactation: It is unknown if octreotide crosses into breast milk; therefore, avoid giving to lactating women.
Interactions
- Ciplactin may have additive effects when taken with CNS depressants such as hypnotics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and anti-anxiety agents.
- Potentially Fatal Interaction: MAOIs can prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of antihistamines.
Adverse Effects (Side Effects)
Common side effects of Cyproheptadine HCl include:
- Psychiatric/Neurologic: CNS depression, drowsiness, sedation (ranging from mild to deep sleep, most frequent), dizziness, lassitude, disturbed coordination. Less commonly, restlessness, insomnia, tremors, euphoria, nervousness, irritability, delirium, seizures, toxic psychosis, paresthesia.
- Muscular: Weakness.
- Cardiovascular: Palpitation, tachycardia, ECG changes (e.g., widened QRS), arrhythmias (e.g., extrasystole, heart block), hypotension, hypertension.
- Gastrointestinal (GI): Epigastric distress, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation.
- Hepatic: Cholestasis, hepatitis, hepatic failure, hepatic function abnormality, jaundice (rare).
- Skin: Eczema, pruritus, inflammation, papular rash, erythema on exposed skin.
- Sensory: Visual disturbances, blurred vision, diplopia, tinnitus, acute labyrinthitis.
- Renal: Dysuria, urinary retention.
- Respiratory: Thickening of bronchial secretions, wheezing, nasal stuffiness.
- Other: Vertigo, sweating, chills, early menses, headache, impotence, dryness of mouth, nose, and throat, facial dyskinesia, tightness of chest, faintness.
Mechanism of Action
Cyproheptadine is a sedating antihistamine with antimuscarinic, serotonin antagonist, and calcium channel blocking properties. It works by competing with histamine for H1-receptor sites on effector cells in the GI tract, blood vessels, and respiratory tract.
