Description
Uses:
- Hypercholesterolemia: To lower elevated cholesterol levels.
- Hypertriglyceridemia: To reduce high triglyceride levels.
- Cardiovascular Risk Reduction: To prevent heart attacks and strokes in individuals at high risk.
Mechanism of Action:
Atorvastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol production in the liver. This leads to a decrease in LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL (good cholesterol).
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Constipation
- Flatulence
- Dyspepsia (indigestion)
- Abdominal pain
Serious side effects, though rare, can include liver dysfunction and muscle pain.
Precautions:
- Liver Disease: Avoid use in patients with active liver disease.
