Aryadine Cream (Povidone Iodine 5% Topical)

Aryadine Cream, manufactured by Arya Pharma Lab Pvt. Ltd., contains Povidone Iodine 5% for topical use. This medication comes in a 15g pack and is available in Nepal. A 5% solution form is also available under the Aryadine brand.

What is Aryadine Cream Used For?

Aryadine Cream is an antiseptic used to treat and prevent infections on the skin. It’s indicated for:

• Primary or secondary topical infections
• Infected surgical incisions
• Infected bedsores (decubitus ulcers) or stasis ulcers
• Pyodermas (skin infections causing pus)
• Secondarily infected skin rashes (dermatoses)
• Infected traumatic lesions (injuries)
• Preventing infections in minor cuts, abrasions, and wounds.

Dosage and Administration

Aryadine Cream is for topical application only.

Adult Dose:

• For treating existing infections: Apply the cream once or twice daily, or with each dressing change, for a maximum of 14 days.
• For preventing infection: Apply once or twice a week for as long as needed.

How to Apply: Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream directly. The treated area may be covered with a dressing or bandage.

Note: Povidone Iodine is also available as a powder. Apply the powder as often as directed, and it may also be covered with a dressing or bandage.

Important Considerations Before Using Aryadine Cream

Do NOT use Aryadine Cream regularly if you have:

• Thyroid disorders, especially nodular colloid goitre, endemic goiter, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
• Do not use in infants under 2 years old.

Use with special caution if:

• You have pre-existing kidney problems and are applying the cream regularly to broken skin.
• You are currently taking lithium therapy (regular use should be avoided).

Precautions:

• Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation.
• Use with caution in neonates (newborns).

Possible Side Effects

Side effects from topical Povidone Iodine 5% may include:

• Local skin irritation and sensitivity.
• Occasionally, a mild, transient burning or sticky sensation.
• Very rarely, irritation or hypersensitivity reactions (allergic reactions).

Systemic Effects (due to iodine absorption): Applying the cream to large areas of broken or denuded skin (e.g., large wounds or severe burns) can lead to the absorption of iodine into the bloodstream, potentially causing:

• Metabolic acidosis (an imbalance in the body’s acid-base levels).
• Hypernatraemia (high sodium levels in the blood).
• Impairment of kidney function.

How It Works

Povidone-iodine, the active ingredient in Aryadine Cream, is an iodophor. It has strong, broad-spectrum germicidal activity, meaning it can kill a wide range of:

• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Fungi
• Protozoa
• Spores

It works by oxidizing cell components and iodinating proteins, which inactivates these microorganisms.
