Medical Uses:
Arvast 5 is prescribed for the following conditions:
- Hyperlipidemia – to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-C, ApoB, and triglyceride levels.
- Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease – especially in individuals with risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, smoking, or family history of heart disease.
- Familial hypercholesterolemia – both heterozygous and homozygous types.
- Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) – to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and need for revascularization.
Dosage and Administration:
- Starting dose: 5 mg once daily (often for low-risk or elderly patients).
- Titration: May be increased depending on patient response and lipid targets.
- Route: Oral, usually taken once daily with or without food.
- Timing: Best taken in the evening or at bedtime, when cholesterol synthesis is highest (though atorvastatin has a long half-life and may be taken at any time of day).
Warnings and Precautions:
- Hepatotoxicity: Monitor liver function tests before starting and periodically thereafter.
- Myopathy/Rhabdomyolysis: Rare but serious. Watch for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
